The 22nd chapter of Genesis is an amazing account of the obedience of Abraham. No other man on earth was ever asked of God to offer his son as a sacrifice. I am amazed when I read this story. It really shows me how well Abraham was aquainted with God. He had such an intimate relationship with God, that he immediately gathered his necessities for offering a sacrifice, which God had said would be his only son.
What a type of the only other One who truly gave His only Son as a sacrifice for a very lost and largely unappreciative world. There are so many types in this chapter that I would recommend a study on your own. You will be amazed.
The verse that stands out to me lets us know that Abraham's faith did not waver at God's command. He knew that God's promises are true and that his large number of decendents were promised through this son that he was being asked to kill! So he knew that at the end of this day, everything was going to be alright. He said in verse 8, "God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And God ultimately did provide for Himself the sacrifice when John the Baptist pronounced; "Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world!"
Abraham was greatly rewarded because of his obedience to God. He saw the hand of God as work before his very eyes. and that great heritage that God promised is still alive and well today!
Choose obedience!
Been thinking of my Dad a lot lately. I didn’t appreciate it then but I recognize now that there was no sacrifice he wouldn’t make for us. A true example of a Godly man. As I read your blog a thought came to me. When God stopped the hand of Abraham He was saying “Wait!! You don’t have to do that, I’m going to do it for you.” Praise God!! Now we have a better covenant and don’t have to wait. It is a finished work. Done deal! Thank you Father!!!
